Mortgage Income Add-Backs

A tax deduction is not automatically a mortgage add-back. This tool shows which common deductions typically restore to qualifying income, which depend on documentation, and which get subtracted — so you can see the real cash-flow picture.

Deduction ≠ add-back

Add-backs exist because some deductions reduce your taxable income without being real cash leaving the business. Depreciation is the classic example — it’s an accounting expense, not a check you wrote. Those get added back. But a deduction that was real cash (most ordinary expenses) stays gone, and non-deductible meals are actually subtracted because they represent cash out that the return doesn’t otherwise capture. Whether any specific item qualifies still depends on the loan program and documentation.
